I am April Caddell. I am a graduate student at the University of Alabama pursuing my Masters of Arts in Women's Studies. My research in Cuba focused on literacy and popular education. What I admired the most about Cuban culture was the intergenerational approach to partying. Our professor had already told us that we would see people of all ages at a party or a dance; furthermore, it was not seen as inappropriate or a hindrance to having a good time. One older woman in particular I saw at two separate rumba parties, and Professor Tomas Robaina in his seventies, danced the best rumba, and most energetically. That sense of community, that welcoming spirit wherever we went – perhaps that is what I will most remember about Cuba.
