My name is Raisa Parnell, also known as Nell. I'm obtaining my Master's degree in the Gender and Race Studies department at the University of Alabama. My research focus is an interdisciplinary one, encompassing religion, anthropology, African, and African diaspora studies. In Cuba, my focus was largely on the religious and spiritual traditions of Regla de Ocha/Santeria, and also came to include Palo Monte. My experiences in Cuba were unforgettable. Coming into contact with mentors, instructors, and new friends who all taught me something memorable and unique about the island and its spiritual tradition. One important phrase I learned while in Cuba was "The person who knows does not die like the one who does not know". This trip to Cuba has added much to my knowledge both at a personal and academic level - and hopefully in time, I can become one who knows.
